hiya! got any advice for trying to create more original pieces for aspiring digital artists? i usually try to copy the reference as close as possible but now i want to deviate away from that, thanks and keep up the great work! :)

It sounds borderline cringeworthy, but let your art reflect you, then it’ll become more personal and consequently more original. Let the things that you love influence you, not just other artists, but films, books, music and literally anything else. Think of references like a tool, an often essential one at that, but not your only resource.

For my painting Out There, I used a reference photo of the lovely Jing Wen. Inspired by a need to travel and roads that can take you anywhere, I knew right from the start (as with most of my work) what I wanted the painting to finish up like. My references are mainly beauty shots from backstage of fashion shows, because they’re often simple, basic images shot in clean light, but they’re also close ups for the most part. For the rest of the painting, I just looked at photographs of sweatshirts (and some real ones too) along with the photographs of roads/mountains which had inspired me. That’s what I mean by using references as a tool, in the pursuit of your vision to create something that didn’t exist before you made it.
